Bridging the Great Divide: Individualism and Individuation in America

This presentation explores how Jungian individuation might be wrested from the grip of individualism in order to tend meaningfully to the exaggerated and tenuous divide between individual and community that results from this American cultural complex. The shadows of individualism in the American psyche are pervasive and all-encompassing, and the overlooked communal and collective aspects of Jungian individuation have the potential to address our crises of loneliness and isolation — exacerbated by the digital age — and reestablish a healthy tension between individuality and collectivity.
